What Are Microplastics and What Should I Do About Them?

At BECYCLE, we’re passionate about living sustainably - from eating plant-based, to using plastic-free alternatives where possible. However, we understand that plastics and synthetic materials are sometimes unavoidable - especially in active wear. We sat down with Alexander Nolte, the co-founder of STOP! MICRO WASTE to find out about microplastics and what we should do about them.

1. What are microplastics and where do they come from?

Microplastics are generally plastics smaller than 5mm in size. Primary microplastics enter nature as small particles, while secondary microplastics result from the fragmentation of macroplastics such as single-use plastics. Main culprits for microplastic pollution are the washing of synthetic textiles and the abrasion of tyres.

2. What are your practical tips to reduce micro waste?

You can stop microplastics at different levels. Choose microplastic free soaps and shampoos or switch to the good old bar of soap. Give single-use plastics and packaging a miss by bringing your own cup, cutlery or boxes. Skip synthetics by buying garments made from natural fibres and buy better quality. Change your washing habits follow our Ten for the Ocean Washing Guide.

3. How did you get involved in this movement? Has it changed the way you live?

A few years ago, we learned that synthetic textiles shed microfibres and that we were contributing to the problem as we were selling outdoor gear. We knew we had to either stop selling synthetics or find a solution. That's when we developed the Guppyfriend, a washing bag that minimises microfibre shedding and retains those fibres that do break. Working on the issue of microplastic has made us more aware of our consumption patterns and changed the way we use plastics in our everyday lives.

5. What about active wear - any recommendations for non-synthetic options? Or tips on washing sweaty clothing?

Switching to non-synthetics such as wool is always an option. However, in the case of active wear, synthetic fabrics are predominantly used. When using synthetics, please follow our Ten for the Ocean Washing Guide:

#1 SKIP PLASTICS! Buy less but better.

#2 STAY COOL! Wash colder.

#3 GOSH, DON'T WASH! Wash less.

#4 NO SPIN! Reduce rotation speed.

#5 NO SHOES! Do not wash solid items with your laundry.

#6 SOFT TO SOFT! Separate textiles with hard and soft surfaces.

#7 BOYS DON'T DRY! Don't tumble dry your clothes.

#8 BE QUICK! Wash shorter.

#9 GREENER CLEANER! Use less and best detergent.

#10 FILTER! Use a filter and the Guppyfriend Washing Bag.
