Adaptogens or “super herbs” are a group of herbs & fungi that have been used since ancient times to support, relax and rebalance the body. Allowing us to adapt to the different stress factors of life, whether these are physically, emotionally, environmentally or chemically-rooted. Our bodies and our brain are constantly fighting to protect our health by maintaining this balance and staying on top of these stressful situations. We, as conscious human beings, can support this process by taking care of ourselves with proper nutrition and sufficient exercise. Adding adaptogens to your diet can help the body to deal with various stresses and maintain its health.

Ashwagandha:

This herb is great when you feel a general lack of energy and focus. It can really help with mental clarity. Ashwagandha is also known for lowering your cortisol levels, which are the stress hormones. So it’s a great one when you’re coping with emotional stress. My favourite uses include helping with low sexual libido and anxiety, among others. It’s also a really good one for overall recovery.

To note: Though this herb seems like a fit-for-all and considered safe, it shouldn’t be taken when pregnant, breastfeeding or when you have thyroid issues. It can also interfere with medication.

Cordyceps:

These mushrooms are part of the truffle fungi family, and mostly loved for their energizing effects. Due to their physical performance-boosting properties, they’re very popular with athletes. But cordyceps can also boost your immune system because of their strong anti-inflammatory properties. Anyone who is recovering from an illness can benefit from consuming cordyceps. Cordyceps are earthy and nutty in taste, and are delicious, both cooked or raw.

To note: Cordyceps are safe and great for short-term use, however some users may feel the discomfort of a dry mouth or nausea. So proceed with care and start out with small doses.

Maca:

This Peruvian root ( related to broccoli, cauliflower and kale) is rich in amino acids, vitamin C and iron, and is very popular for its ability to boost fertility and libido. Maca is known for improving hormone imbalances, and can help with hot flashes & mood swings during menopause. It can also help improve your mental well-being and mood by reducing stress and anxiety.

To note: If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, or you have experienced thyroid problems, you should be careful with maca.

An easy way to incorporate adaptogens into your daily routine is simply to add them to the foods you're already consuming. Most of them will come in powder form, so no need to overcomplicate - just add them to your yogurt, nut butters, broths or pastries. Liquids are the easiest, so a smoothie might be the best choice, or if you like maple syrup, you can spike your bottle by adding some of your favourite adaptogens, for example. If you’re up for a sweet treat, try this recipe below!
