1. What motivated you to join the BEbarre Teacher Training?

I wanted to get to know my body better. All my life I had been active and never had any problems with my body, then one day I pushed myself too far in an aerobics class and suffered a knee injury. It really changed how I thought about movement. I was amazed at how much having a knee issue affected other parts of my body. After a few months of physiotherapy, I wanted to make sure I found ways to protect myself during exercise in future so that this would never happen to me again. I discovered BECYCLE at this point and took all the classes I could, I was particularly enamoured with the Barre classes. I also attended an alignment workshop that Shirah had previously run at the studio.  When I saw that there was teacher training and I enquired with a couple of people at the studio, I realised this might be a great opportunity to learn about the intricacies of movement as well as how to keep myself safe during exercise.

2. What was your favourite part about the training?

The super geeky technical bits! I loved seeing the videos of how the muscles and joints come together inside the human body and learning about anatomy.

I also loved the demos of all the barre movements and learning about the common patterns people fall into so I knew to protect myself in future.

3. Do you feel that going through the training has changed your experience in class?

Totally. I would say that I am now much more of a ‘conscious’ mover. I am much more in tune with my body so understand exactly how far I can push myself. Now, I won’t try to push my body into an advanced movement if it compromises my alignment.

4. Do you have any advice for future participants?

Jump right in! Its very intense and you’ll learn a lot so try to keep other life/work plans to a minimum during the training period so you can stay focussed.
