Quirks About KATHARINE
Katharine is a fun-loving barre teacher that will make sure you come out sweating.
What is your go-to breakfast on a busy morning? I typically eat muesli in plain yogurt accompanied by an espresso with a bit of almond milk in it.
What's your best strategy to stay motivated? I stay motivated by reminding myself how great it feels to complete a challenging workout. After a great workout, I feel energetic, confident, and inspired to keep working hard. I find that for me, motivation comes from a positive cycle of sticking to my workout routine and keeping in mind that I feel physically and mentally strong after the session.
The best thing we can do for ourselves after a workout is… Take some time to reflect on how great we feel to have been challenged. We need to take a moment to remind ourselves how important self-care is. If we appreciate how great we feel after a workout, we will find motivation to work out consistently.
Is there a special dietary regime you follow? What changes have you seen or felt since you have started it? I tend to prefer whole foods. About 8 years ago, I went to an integrative nutritionist who taught me about the benefits of whole foods. Her recipes helped me to discover how much fun cooking healthy meals could be. Her program primarily focused on using non-processed foods to create tasty meals and snacks. Since working with her, my outlook on how I feed my body transformed. I prefer foods that give me energy and don’t leave me feeling sluggish after I eat them. The program focused on viewing nutrition as a means to help your body operate at it’s optimum energy level. I feel physically and mentally energetic when I follow the advice she gave me.
What are your top three barre moves/exercises to do at home? 1. Leg pulses in lunge position to target the quads and feel a serious burn in the legs. 2. Planks with an oblique twist (opposite elbow to opposite tricep) to fire up the core and work the shoulders and arms. Side lying glutes series using a Theraband. Come to my class to feel the burn and learn the series!
What are your tips to have energy all day? I snack. I prefer small, healthy snacks like dates (largely because I have a sweet tooth) to keep my energy up. Sleep is so important for keeping our energy intact. It’s a simple tip, but I find that getting enough sleep is something that a lot of us struggle with. I try to walk as much as possible and of course get my regular workouts in to keep my spirits up.
What's your favourite motivational quote if any? I can’t say that I have favorite motivational quote but there is a word that I live by: Perseverance. In my life thus far, nothing has served me better than an ability to persevere. I’ve had a lengthy academic career and embarked on a couple of international moves and I can honestly say that no matter the challenges associated with all of these endeavors, I have needed to persevere. It’s not easy. I’ve had moments that have tested my strength, but if there is a quality I really admire, it’s the commitment to persevere and celebrate the confidence and strength that come from doing so.
Favourite smoothie at MyGoodness: Sweet Beets.
Best Restaurant in Berlin: I love Pasta & Vino on Stargarder Str. When I want fantastic pasta, I go there.
Best Bar in Berlin: Die Bar. Tiny, but I love that atmosphere at night.
Best Place to dance in Berlin: I don’t know! I’m relatively new to Berlin so I’m open to suggestions for a great place to dance! Tell me sometime, after class.
Favourite exercise: The Teaser in Pilates. It never ceases to burn my core and always challenges me.
Least favourite exercise: That's an easy answer: BURPEES, obviously!
Dog, cats, neither? Why? Dogs. Hands down, no contest. I actually have a tattoo of my pug, Stewie on my right forearm because to me, dogs are the ultimate teachers in life. My family has had pugs for over 30 years and from them we have learned patience, kindness, honesty, and trust. I could wax poetic about dogs for days. While I’m an animal lover in general (My master’s degree thesis focused on human-animal interactions), dogs are my absolute favorite!
What's your personal theme song? Australia by The Shins. I can’t hear that song without feeling hopeful and motivated.
You're stranded on an island. What's the one thing you'd wish you had and why? My pugs, Stewie and Gretel. I’d never be lonely and I’d never be short on hugs.
