A Sydney Girl's Guide to the Best Coffee in Berlin - Part Two

If you haven’t already read Part One, this guide is a second round-up of Berlin’s best brews, as told by our latte-loving BECYCLE team member and yogi, Anja.

“Before we launch into the next round of epic cafes in Berlin, did you know that there are actually (scientifically proven) health benefits to this elixir that often gets a bad wrap? Of course we are all so bio-diverse and we intuitively know what works for us, but if like me you are a coffee lover who sometimes feels guilty and wonders if they should switch it up for a turmeric latte instead, hang on a sec!

  1. Caffeine blocks inhibitory neurotransmitters in the brain, creating a stimulating affect which can assist with energy levels, mood and various brain functions.

  2. It is a great natural fat burning and metabolic boosting aid.

  3. It also increases adrenaline levels in the blood and prepares the body for physical exertion - breaking down fatty acids to be used as fuel, so a cup half an hour before a workout is actually a pretty good idea!

  4. Apart from being the highest source of antioxidants in the western diet, coffee is actually full of other essential vitamins and nutrients including riboflavin (B2), pantothenic acid (B3), magnesium/niacin (B5) and potassium.

Bottom line? If you enjoy the taste and can tolerate the caffeine found within, don't hesitate to enjoy a cup (or two). Here are some of my favourite places to do so!

MITTE/KREUZBERG

19 GRAMS

Chausseestraße 36, 10115 Berlin + Schlesische Straße 38, 10997 Berlin

These guys are seriously passionate about 'Bloody Good Coffee!' With a cleverly derived name (19 grams = the weight of a single shot of coffee), follow the sign to the hole-in-the-wall 'espresso and go' location in Kreuzberg, or visit the newer Mitte location for a lazy brunch. Super healthy/vegan options available!

EAST & EDEN

Torstraße 141, 10115 Berlin

This is one of my favourite places to get cosy and get some work done, with it's high ceilings, low dim lights, and squishy sofas. Find tasty coffee, breakfast/brunch, gourmet sandwiches, and VERY reasonable prices considering the location!

WESTBERLIN

Friedrichstraße 215, 10969 Berlin

Amongst the tourist traps that lay await at Check Point Charlie, find genuine cool vibes and the best coffee in the area at West Berlin. Sit on contemporary designer furniture and browse international magazines and publications as you sip and people watch.

POPULUS COFFEE

Maybachufer 20, 12045 Berlin

A Nordic, Berlin based specialty coffee roastery where delicious espressos and filter coffees are roasted and brewed daily. This family run joint is super mindful about all of their offerings, with a focus on quality and origin of both their coffee, and the carefully crafted menu to match.

CHAPTER ONE

Mittenwalder Straße 30, 10961 Berlin

Another pit stop for epic croissants and croissant pretzel hybrids accompanied by great coffee (but sadly no oat milk). Try a specialty slow coffee from their Siphon Brew Bar, with excellent guidance provided on the rather large bean menu.

NOTHAFT SEIDEL CAFé

Schönhauser Allee 43A, 10435 Berlin

You may have gathered from my last post that I am always on the look out for an epic croissant. So one day when I walked past and saw 'Vegan Chocolate Croissants' I was sold. Find a pretty impressive selection of freshly baked goods, fresh juices and lovely coffee.

SILO COFFEE

Gabriel-Max-Straße 4, 10245 Berlin

In typical Aussie fashion, organic eggs meet avocado with Italian baker Sironi's break to mop up the tomato sauce, washed down with a serious flat white. In the heart of Boxenhager Platz, with rustic wooden furniture, Silo is a third wave coffee lover's dream come true, offering choices from several roasters alongside a variety of brewing methods.

HAPPY BARISTAS

Neue Bahnhofstraße 32, 10245 Berlin

This multi roaster cafe collaborates with the best of the best Europe has to offer, providing vibrant colours and robust flavours on rotation in their bar and retail store. No fuss, no brunch, no bottled drinks - think of this as a Caribbean-inspired nitro lab for coffee.

ISLA COFFEE

Hermannstraße 37, 12049 Berlin

A really cool concept by alumni of my favourite ex-locale Cafe 9 (as featured in Part One) - A zero wastage cafe with epic coffee! The grounds make the cups, and the pulp from the freshly made juices is given to a baker who makes them into deliciously baked goods. A challenging but worthwhile journey to support.
